Análise do Asilo Arkham na série Gotham: a dinâmica entre cidade, território e indivíduo

Abstract

The present study seeks to understand the maintenance of psychological suffering through the representation of Arkham Asylum on the television series Gotham, so as to reflect about the mental health in an asylum context of the city. A cinematographic analysis of two episodes of the series was carried out, allowing us to outline the relationship between city, territory and individual, as well as to identify the art of representation in cinematic narrative, at last, analysis aimed to examine Arkham Asylum as an institution on control in a diseased territory. Being to audiovisual media a means of visibility and identification, it is concluded that the asylum is a control device intended to separate inmates from the city’s territory, wherein reinforced both by the series choice of dramatic factors, and identity symbolizations. The entire city is depicted as dark and marked by injustice, and the Asylum blends with Gotham, therefore not being as a viable solution for treating the city’s inmates.
