Tratamento fisiátrico em animal com doença do disco intervertebral: relato de caso

Abstract

Veterinary physiatry is an area that has been gaining notoriety in the treatment of various conditions, accelerating recovery and contributing to the well-being of patients through less invasive techniques. Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is defined as the alteration and degeneration of the intervertebral disc structures, which can cause clinical signs such as severe pain and paralysis of the thoracic and/or pelvic limbs. In view of these changes and clinical signs, the use of physiatry becomes fundamental in the recovery of the animal. During the curricular internship, it was possible to follow consultations and elaborate protocols for physical therapy treatment in patients with different diagnoses, the main ones being: endocrinopathies, discopathies, traumas and congenital disorders. In the consultations, evaluations were carried out in relation to the neurological and orthopedic status of the animals, through anamnesis, the patient's living conditions (food, coexistence floor, height of feeder and drinker, vaccination, among others), physical examination, orthopedic examination and neurological. Then, perimetry measurements (muscle mass assessment), goniometry (joint range of motion assessment) were recorded, and then the protocol was elaborated according to the initial objectives of the treatment, among them analgesia, activation, relaxation or muscle strengthening. The objective of this work was to report the case of a small female dog, mixed breed, with IVDD Hansen type I, in which physiotherapeutic treatment was carried out in order to work on muscle strengthening with the aim of improving pain, mobility and quality of life. of the patient.
