Abstract

This paper presents the importance of interior decoration and its influence on the definition of Brazilian social classes from the 19th century. The visual culture would be part of the life of the Brazilians of the time, just as it already had its space in other countries. The practice of decorating made the furniture better known, and the desire to have an extra furniture each day or in a different place sharpened the need for knowledge about them. The presence of the woman so that in this society was important so that the men could be successful in the society. In this way, there are still reflexes of this social culture still in the current ones. Decoration is a habit that is perfected every day. Just as we decorated the parties to welcome the guests, it all reminds us of a nineteenth-century heritage. The social culture had great importance to define social classes of the time. The home was the most important environment for society, and it was through its decoration that the position of that family in society was defined. The paintings of ALMEIDA JUNIOR are studied here to understand this society and how works of art were important for the definition of social classes.
