A formação da família escrava no Brasil colonial

Abstract

This monograph research has as its main objective, to carry out an investigation into the slave family in colonial Brazil, which was an important period in the country's history. Since the beginning of the occupation of Brazilian lands, it has been possible to perceive the action of black people, but also of Indians who were the first inhabitants of this territory and the Portuguese who implemented a different type of life for indigenous people and black Africans who came to work as slaves in the sugar cane crops. This monograph proposal aims to rescue the history of these black populations, as they were important in the period that we will analyze, mainly due to their struggles and resistance throughout the history of Brazil and because this social group is often “forgotten” of a history or an official historiography. As previously mentioned, the purpose of this monograph is to research the History of the slave family in colonial Brazil, but we also have other more specific objectives, which are to historically understand its origin and formation; their specificities as a family and their struggles in daily life in Colonial Brazil. These families have had several social problems historically, firstly because they were forced to come to Brazil, as they were normally kidnapped in their country of origin in Africa, and from there they started to work on sugarcane plantations here in Brazil and in other regions of Latin America where slave labor existed. In addition to several problems, these families suffered abuse in a variety of ways, as they found themselves in a position of slaves, where in this model of organization, they had no rights, nor were they considered citizens, as citizenship in Brazil was still far from happening. They historically had to fight to defend their rights for freedom, which took time, but came, despite the limitations of life in society for free black people at the end of the 19th century. Because it was with a lot of struggle that they achieved, even if in a limited way, their freedom before their masters. Even so, throughout their history they had countless problems from their arrival until their liberation, in order to stop being slaves, but the problems remain, as these families have historically suffered the most varied forms of violence, both in the fields of where they worked, but also in domestic spaces, in the houses of planters.
