Abstract

This monographic research aims to analyze the holy inquisition in the Middle Ages. This was created by Pope Gregory IX, with the aim of punishing all those who were against the principles of the Catholic Church, or who doubted its dogmas, those who were considered heretics, witches or who had a religion other than Catholic. Our specific objectives are 3: to study the holy inquisition in its relationship with feudal society; understand the church's actions towards infidels and analyze the courts and church actions in relation to the inquisition. This period is marked by the contestation of Catholic dogmas and the church will put strong pressure on these heretics to stop these practices of doubting Catholic dogmas. In relation to the research problem, we will seek to answer the following problem: From an in-depth study of the holy inquisition we will have the possibility of clarifying some questions that persist in appearing. Why were heretics started to be persecuted by the Catholic church? And which torture methods were so violent, even leading to death at the holy fire? In an attempt to answer these questions, we will analyze this object, which is directly linked to the practices of the medieval church. Our hypothesis concerns the crisis of the church, mainly its dogmas and from there the creation of the inquisition courts, which were formed precisely in the 13th century by the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church. It was basically these courts that judged everyone considered a threat to the doctrines of the church. The suspects were persecutors and tried, and those who were convicted, served sentences ranging from temporary or even perpetual imprisonment, death at the holy fire and the condemned were burned alive in a public square. However, the monks of the holy office arrived in the cities and gathered the entire population in the church. The defense was difficult, the defendant hardly had the right to a defender. To extract confessions, the holy office placed spies to watch the suspect and used various torture practices. In the methodology of this research, we propose to read works about the Middle Ages and feudal society, texts about the church and its inquisition practices, which will provide a basis for the development of this monograph.
